Who I Am

About Zoey

I’m an eighth grader currently attending The Pike School. In school, I take part in leadership, writing, athletics, music, speech, and debate. I like to take on roles that allow me to contribute actively to the school community. I am the President of Generation Green, my school’s sustainability club, in which I help to lead initiatives related to environmental awareness and action. I also serve as the Marketing Director of my school’s newspaper, where I work on promotion, outreach, and engagement.

Speech and debate have really dominated my whole middle school experience. I’ve been the Captain of my speech and debate team, and I have participated in every single tournament that I could. During all these competitions, I always won an award, showing from my growth to commitment as a speaker. Through speech and debate, I realized that my confidence had strengthened even more, but so had my critical thinking and clarification or articulation of ideas in support or argument.

I am particularly drawn to subjects that are sensitive, complex, or that are mainly misconstrued. I like using my speeches and writing to help others get insight on such issues.

Several of my writings have been honored through awards, including the Scholastic Gold Key award in the state of Massachusetts, the Scholastic Silver Medal award at the national level, as well as the Certificate of Commendation award in the John Locke Essay Competition. Writing, as a process, represents one of the central ways in which I generate ideas.

Music is another big aspect of my life. I play the violin and piano, and I also sing. I help coordinate and present concerts for senior centers. I help arrange performance programs, coordinating with the people to put on the concerts. I have been a part of all these concerts since I was in elementary school. They have taught me a lot about leadership and using my talents for the benefit of the community.

Another important aspect of my life is athletics. I am involved in The Pike School’s cross-country, basketball, and track and field teams. Through these sports, I value the discipline as well as the friends I have made built through teamwork and competition. Being actively involved in athletics has helped me develop the ability to push myself through hardships. These experiences have played an important role in shaping me.

In addition, art is also something that I enjoy engaging in. Visual art gives me another way to express ideas and experiment creatively, and it’s an important part of how I think and create alongside writing and music.
