As the captain of the Speech & Debate team at The Pike School, I oversee practice sessions for my team members before competitions. This experience has helped me effectively communicate, listen actively, and lead with confidence and understanding.
Speech & Debate stretches me in terms of critical thinking and articulating thoughts clearly and effectively. It is through research projects, the writing of speeches, and competition that I have learned the skills necessary for constructing an argument, addressing an argument with an opposition point of view, and performing well under stress. But perhaps just as important is the element of teamwork.
I have learned through my experience of leading the team that good leadership is a product of preparation and encouragement. Whether I am working on helping members improve their speeches or simply leading by example during practices, I enjoy creating a dynamic where all members are encouraged and empowered to improve. Speech & Debate encompasses my passions of the written word, public speaking, and leading. It is where my extracurricular and academic selves meet.
